Other-Oriented Robot Deception: How Can a Robot's Deceptive Feedback Help Humans in HRI?

چکیده
Deception is a common and essential behavior of social agents. By increasing the use of social robots, the need for robot deception is also growing to achieve more socially intelligent robots. It is a goal that robot deception should be used to benefit humankind. We define this type of benevolent deceptive behavior as other-oriented robot deception. In this paper, we explore an appropriate context in which a robot can potentially use other-oriented deceptive behaviors in a beneficial way. Finally, we conduct a formal humanrobot interaction study with elderly persons and demonstrate that using otheroriented robot deception in a motor-cognition dual task can benefit deceived human partners. We also discuss the ethical implications of robot deception, which is essential for advancing research on this topic.

Deceptive robot motion: synthesis, analysis and experiments
Much robotics research explores how robots can clearly communicate true information. Here, we focus on the counterpart: communicating false information, or hiding information altogether – in one word, deception. Robot deception is useful in conveying intentionality, and in making games against the robot more engaging. We study robot deception in goal-directed motion, in which the robot is conce...

متن کاملToward understanding social cues and signals in human–robot interaction: effects of robot gaze and proxemic behavior
As robots are increasingly deployed in settings requiring social interaction, research is needed to examine the social signals perceived by humans when robots display certain social cues. In this paper, we report a study designed to examine how humans interpret social cues exhibited by robots. We first provide a brief overview of perspectives from social cognition in humans and how these proces...
متن کاملMethods for Studying Group Interactions in HRI
We explore deception in the context of a multi-player robotic game. The robot does not participate as a competitor, but is in charge of declaring who wins or loses every round. The robot was designed to deceive game players by imperceptibly balancing how much they won, with the hope this behavior would make them play longer and with more interest. Inducing false belief about who wins the game w...
متن کاملThe role of expectations in HRI
Whenever humans interact they form expectations which their behaviour is grounded in. This paper claims that this is also true for human-robot interaction (HRI). It introduces assumptions from expectation theory and illustrates how these can be tested in an HRI context. The paper aims to show that knowing the users’ expectations can help to design robots. Since user expectations depend on the r...
